Interesting Times Makes You Focus on What's Important
The famous proverb, “May you live in interesting times,” certainly is applicable for the weeks we have spent living with the virus. As the co-owner/operator of the small business, Flesor’s Candy Kitchen, “interesting times” underscores our journey from the middle of March until now. My sister and I own the confectionery and restaurant and we have experienced all that you have read on social media. However, we are still open, and in many ways, it has been an opportunity to step back and examine just what our work is all about. There are three components that stand out:
CORE BUSINESS: we have been reminded just what our core business is: candy and food, but particularly candy. Our customers have ordered online and come to our store for amazing amounts of candy. Our wholesale orders have increased.
CUSTOMER RELATIONS: because of the decreased amount of traffic, we have had the opportunity to spend more time with our customers and how wonderful that has been! Never have we spent more energy on communication through social media, local news, and genuine conversations with folks who now have had time for visits. It has generated good relationships and consequently, revenue.
CHANGE: obviously, business has changed and expectations will never be the same. Some aspects will be better, some not so much, but the fact that we have been able to pivot and be creative has enabled us to endure. As we move forward through the transition, we are better equipped to withstand the unexpected.
Of course, this time has not been easy and we have been fortunate to work with great staff, advisors, and friends. It is a journey that keeps evolving, and continues to be exciting!
