Make Today a QTIP Day
We’ve all had one of those days where nothing seems to be going your way. Your spouse is cranky because of something that happened at work, your child yells at you because they received a bad grade on a test they didn’t study for, your boss adds extra work to your already full to-do list, the nonprofit you are helping just doesn’t seem to appreciate all the things that you are doing for them, and to top it off, someone just cut you off in traffic. The list of injustices seems to go on and on and you begin to feel a bit overwhelmed and just a wee bit under appreciated.
Now let’s catch our breath for a moment and ask, “Do you feel bad or personally responsible for the events that just happened?” If you said yes, then you need to grab a QTIP to remind yourself to Quit Taking It Personally, because nine times out of ten, you are not.
Here’s the thing. Everyone has their own perspectives on life and the ensuing events that occur. People are not doing things to you or against you. They’re way too busy with their own life to be aware of how this may even affect you. You can’t change their perspective, but you certainly can change the way YOU perceive these events.
Now, tomorrow carry around a QTIP to remind yourself to ask three questions when you feel like an injustice has occurred.
1. Is it important?
2. Is it reasonable for me to be angry?
3. Can I change the situation?
If the answer to any of these is no, then you should let it go.
Living the QTIP way will help you live a long life filled with psychological and physical well-being. It will also teach you coping skills that will come in handy during hardships and stressful times. So what is holding you back? Try it today!
